Boyd Bridge, Wasco County, Oregon

BRIDGE NEAR BOYD

A concrete arched bridge over a creek in Wasco County Oregon. This was probably part of the original road connecting The Dalles with points south in the central part of the state.

Excellent examples of columnar basalt line the creek on both sides.

New Crooked River Bridge, Oregon

NEW CROOKED RIVER BRIDGE

This was the first cast-in-place arch bridge ever built in the United States. The new span, completed in 2000 carries US 97 over the Crooked River in central Oregon. It is some 300 feet above the river below.

Old Crooked River Bridge, Oregon

OLD CROOKED RIVER BRIDGE "High Bridge"

The original preserved span designed by Conde McCullough carried US 97 for decades over the Crooked River north of Bend. It was replaced by the new bridge (above) in 2000. Today it is preserved as a pedestrian and bike-only bridge. It lies inbetween the new bridge and the even older railroad bridge immediately to the west.

Crooked River Railroad Bridge, Oregon

CROOKED RIVER RAILROAD BRIDGE "Trunk Railroad Bridge"

This steel arch bridge is the oldest span across the Crooked River, and was completed in 1911. This bridge was part of a "railroad" war between the Spokane, Seattle & Portland Railroad and the Union Pacific. It was built during a "race" to serve resource-rich central Oregon by rail at the turn of the century. Interestingly, Union Pacific lost against the regional SP&S RR.
